A Brief History of Plant Pathology at National Taiwan University

The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology was established on August 1, 2003. However, the department was initially founded as the Department of Plant Pathology and Entomology in 1948, making it one of the pioneering education and research units at National Taiwan University (NTU). Later, the department was divided into the Division of Plant Pathology and the Division of Entomology in 1998. In 2003, the Department of Plant Pathology was renamed the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology (PPM). This change was implemented to provide comprehensive training in both basic and applied microbiological sciences, thereby expanding career opportunities for students. Today, the department continues to foster excellence in education and research.

Advancing Excellence in Plant Pathology and Microbiology Education

At the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology (PPM), our mission is to equip students with a robust academic foundation in microbiology and plant pathology. We aim to develop future researchers and experts who will specialize in these critical fields and contribute significantly to the nation.

To achieve this, our curriculum encompasses a comprehensive range of courses in microbiology, cell biology, and molecular biology. Students receive rigorous training in various microbiological and biotechnological techniques. Our course offerings include both fundamental and applied subjects such as:

  • Microbiology:
    • Microbiology
    • Methods in Microbiology
    • Mycology
    • Bacteriology
    • Virology
    • Nematology
    • Applied Microbiology
  • Molecular Genetics:
    • Molecular Biology
    • Prokaryotic Molecular Biology
    • Molecular Virology
    • Genetics
  • Plant Pathology:
    • Plant Pathology
    • Methods in Plant Pathology
    • Plant Pathogenic Microorganisms
    • Ecology of Plant Pathogens
    • Plant Disease Diagnosis
    • Plant Disease Management
    • Noninfectious Plant Diseases

The department fosters a vibrant learning environment where students consistently achieve outstanding academic results. Our alumni have excelled in diverse professional fields, making significant contributions to society. Continuing this legacy, graduates from our department are well-prepared to apply their knowledge and skills to advance scientific research and address critical challenges in plant pathology and microbiology.

Department Emblem Design ConceptDepartment Emblem

The emblem design features a plant extending upward with its leaves unfolding boundlessly. From these leaves emerge the four primary pathogens studied in our department: viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes, symbolizing the inseparable relationship between plants and microorganisms. What stories will the fifth young leaf tell? We eagerly await new students to join us at the Department of PPM to compose the next chapter.
